MWRD Board Requests Wildlife Study

Today at our second April Board meeting, my colleagues and I unanimously passed a motion requesting that the Illinois Department of Natural Resources perform a wildlife survey on the site of the proposed Chicago Police Department firing range and MWRD’s adjacent properties including O’Brien Lock Marsh and Whitford Pond.

The purpose of a wildlife survey is to identify state-protected species, such as the Black-Crowned Night-Heron, that may be nesting on or near the site of the proposed firing range. The study will begin almost immediately during the spring migratory season as many bird species use the Calumet area as both a migratory stopover and as final destination for nesting.

I hope to share findings from the wildlife survey later this year.
